Our Story

The Duck is a local, family-owned & operated restaurant in Midlothian's Westchester Commons Shopping Center. We feature upscale, seasonal cuisine & craft cocktails, in a casual dining atmosphere.

We are proudly defined as a 'scratch kitchen', where all dishes are executed in-house. Classified as 'New American' cuisine, our menu incorporates international influences & showcases seasonal ingredients.

Our non-traditional "New American" menu incorporates a variety of international influences & cooking techniques, featuring local produce & seasonal ingredients. We are passionate about fashioning edgy variations of classic dishes, inspired by various cultures around the world.

At The Duck, we continuously strive to develop our menu offerings & enhance our service quality, in an effort to provide a unique, pleasurable dining experience for local patrons & first-time visitors.

About the Owner

The grand opening of The Shaved Duck Restaurant in 2017 was a dream come true for owner and general manager Joe Kmetz, whose lifelong vision was to open a family-owned-and-operated business. 

The restaurant's "name" was solidified during a late night brainstorming session, over whiskey & fond memories of his grandparents' love of duck memorabilia. Joe’s grandfather was an avid collector, and it was the group of carved (shaved) ducks that impressed Joe the most.  

A local graduate of Midlothian High School and Virginia Commonwealth University, Joe was always drawn to the hospitality industry. His experience spans a multitude of roles– from a cook behind the scenes in the kitchen, to the forefront– as a busboy, server, manager and all around "friendly face," honing his customer service and managerial skills while forming a loyal following along the way.
