ABOUT THE DUCK

The Shaved Duck Restaurant is located in Midlothian, Virginia. We're an “upscale casual” dining venue, focusing on first class cuisine and craft cocktails. Our nontraditional New American menu incorporates fresh local produce, meats and seafood. 

 

We are proud to be defined as a scratch kitchen, and delighted to support the local and regional land and sea farmers who harvest and deliver the best of the best. Everything from farm to kitchen to table is conceived and assembled in our own state-of-the-art kitchen. We are passionate about fashioning and serving edgy variations of classic dishes, inspired by various cultures around the world. At the Shaved Duck Restaurant, we strive every day to enhance our offerings and consistently “go against the grain” of industry standards in an effort to provide a unique and pleasurable dining experience for local patrons and first-time visitors to the Metropolitan Richmond area.

The grand opening of The Shaved Duck Restaurant in 2017 was a dream come true for owner and general manager Joe Kmetz, whose lifelong vision was to open a family-owned-and-operated business. The Shaved Duck "name" was solidified during a late night brainstorming session (with a little help from a few swigs of whiskey) and fond memories of his grandparents' love of duck memorabilia. Joe’s grandfather was an avid collector, and it was the group of carved (shaved) ducks that impressed Joe the most.  

 

​A graduate of Midlothian High School and Virginia Commonwealth University, Joe was always drawn to the hospitality industry. His experience spans a multitude of roles– from a cook behind the scenes in the kitchen, to the forefront– as a busboy, server, manager and all around "friendly face," honing his customer service and managerial skills while forming a loyal following along the way.​
